Training your puppy involves a lot of work.
As soon as he/she comes into your home, you have to start the process of training. So, keep in mind that the sooner you start the training, the easier it becomes to train your puppy. The fastest and most effective way of training your puppy is to use positive reinforcement methods. The best way to reward your puppy when he/she follows your command is to reward it with food or kibble. Your puppy is already familiar with it and will consider it to be a good motivator to follow commands.
Introduce clicker training
Using clicker training is a good option because the clicker helps you know the precise moment when your puppy has followed your command. It also helps your puppy learn faster and in a more effective manner. However, you should limit your clicker training to just the sessions falling just prior to your puppy’s mealtime. This provides both structure as well as helps your puppy develop an association between obeying the command and being rewarded for doing so. However, before the clicker training delivers results, you need to make sure you make your puppy understand the meaning of the clicker and be sure to reward him/her with some kibble every time they follow your command. One click should equate to a single reward.
Reward your dog when he/she obeys you
By doing this a few times, you can make your puppy understand that the clicker means that he/she is going to get a reward. Of course, the reward should only be given when your puppy does something he/she should be doing. Next, you can use the clicker to make your puppy sit down, lie down or even make eye contact with you. Just make sure you only reward calm and positive behaviors.
Keep your puppy interested
It is important that you keep your puppy interested in the clicker training sessions and also keep a look out for when he/she becomes overexcited. This is also a way to teach your puppy his/her name. when you say his/her name, and then you click, your puppy should make eye contact with you. If he/she seems to be distracted, be sure to use the kibble to get his/her attention once more. Moving the kibble in front of your puppy and forcing it to make eye contact is a good way of teaching him/her their name.
Teach him scent
The most important behavior that you need to teach your puppy is that of scent. You should also let him/her know the consequences of his/her behavior and make sure they follow your command in a more consistent manner. In the beginning, you should only use clicker training and you should avoid using verbal commands as much as possible. Once he/she gets used to following the clicker sound, you can then start using verbal commands. It is also a good idea to use many words of praise to let the puppy know they are doing something correct and desirable. Also, make sure the training session is no longer than 10 to 15 minutes. Also, make sure you leave your puppy wanting more so that they will be excited about the next session.
Last but not least, make sure to allow for short bursts of playing are good because they encourage your puppy to look for the right things to play with. Give him/her some toys and keep play sessions limited to ten to fifteen minutes to allow them to expend some energy.
