If you want to take your dog along with you, as you go out, it is essential for you to train them to walk on a leash.
Training is important; otherwise your dog might not be comfortable walking around with the leash. Once your pet has been trained, it will be convenient for you to take them along for a walk around the neighborhood, or even visit a neighbor. All dogs do not respond in the same manner, when it comes to leash training. Some of them will get used to it immediately, while others will try to bite it or get rid of it as soon as they get a chance. Here are a few steps that will help you and your dog in mastering leash training:
Select the right leash:
Before you start training your dog to walk with that leash, you should be sure that you have the equipment that is needed. You should purchase a leash that is suitable for your dog. A nylon leash usually works for most breeds out there. Also, don’t use a leash that is made for smaller dogs on a dog that is of a larger size. Some dogs try to tug at the leash. To prevent that, you can use a harness rather than a collar. This will make it easier for you as the dog will have to turn around to tug at the leash.
Positive association is important:
When you introduce the leash, you should associate it with something positive. If you force the dog to wear it, your pet will not be happy wearing it. Let the dog play with it and explore it when you introduce him or her to it. When you finally make the dog wear it, praise your pet, and you can even give him or her a gift to positively reinforce the action.
Give it a try indoors:
Directly taking the puppy training outside may not work as there might be a lot of distractions for the young puppy. Try to make him walk from one room to another while he wears the leash. Go stepwise and reward him for each step that he takes.
Take the puppy outside:
When you take your puppy outside, it may not work out as is it did when you were indoors. If the puppy resists, let it deal with the leash by itself. When it settles down, give a treat. This will help it associate getting a treat with a lose leash, and it will help you in training your puppy successfully.
Give more treats:
As mentioned before, treats and praise is very essential when it comes to puppy training. Positive reinforcement helps the dog in learning. Verbal praise can also work as it will encourage the dog.
One thing is for sure. The training is going to require time and lots of patience as well. There will be times when it will get on your nerves, but it will take time. Your dog will eventually learn!
