Teaching your puppy to roll over is a neat trick that is both an easy and fun task.
At the outset, it must be emphasized that puppy training involves first teaching your pup to follow the down command. Once your puppy has learned the down command, you can then proceed with training it to roll over.
The first step involves giving your puppy the down command. Once he/she is in the down position, you are ready to start the teaching process that will culminate in your puppy learning to roll over. Be sure to kneel next to your dog and hold a nice yummy treat in your hand. Be sure to place the treat to one side of your puppy’s head and close to where it can smell the treat. Ideally, you want to ensure the treat is as close to his nose as possible.
Second, take the treat and move it from the dog’s nose toward his shoulder. This will have the effect of making your puppy roll flat on one side. When your puppy does this, you should repeat the exercise a few times and be sure to praise him/her each time they perform the required action. Make sure your puppy is lying on one side with his or her head on the floor.
Third, continue moving the treat and hold it once your puppy is lying on his/her side. Move the treat from his/her shoulder towards his backbone. This will force your puppy to roll on the other side. Repeat this exercise a few times till your puppy learns to roll from one side to the other.
Fourth, once he/she has started rolling over, you are now ready to teach him the command “Roll Over”. Now, it is time for you to reduce the luring of your puppy gradually with the treat. Make sure that your puppy performs the trick on the Roll Over command.
Fifth, when you start puppy training your pup to teach him/her to roll over, make sure that you praise their correct actions and also be sure to reward them for the effort they have put into learning to roll over.
Things to keep in mind
Keep in mind that you do not always have to reward your puppy when he/she performs the required action during their puppy training sessions. Some dog owners prefer praising the pup. The right option for you is to use the clicker and treats together. Also, make sure you never punish your puppy for not following instructions. This is because dogs cannot understand negative reinforcement and so will not be able to learn a new trick. Using punishment might actually make your pup associate the trick with experiencing fear.
Another aspect of puppy training is that you should use the puppy training sessions in a suitable training room. Be sure to train him/her in a room that he feels comfortable in and where there is nothing to distract him/her. You will know that your puppy training has achieved its objective when your pup starts to roll over without needing to be given a treat.
