In 2008, Janie, a resident of Simi Valley, noticed that her eight-year-old Springer Spaniel named Sammi was limping. As days went on, his limping started to become worse, and after two weeks, he fell. Janie took Sammi to the vet, and he was diagnosed with a spinal injury. He underwent a series of tests which revealed that he had a slipped disk below his neck.
His spinal cord was unable to function well because of a growing bone. The vet required surgery, and after being confined to the hospital for nine days, he had to be rehabilitated so he could walk again. During the first few days of his therapy at California Animal Rehabilitation in Santa Monica, Sammi was unable to walk, and he could not hold his head up. Many people thought that he would never have a chance to walk again.
However, Sammi had an incredible determination that proved them wrong. He was able to walk again after caregivers worked tirelessly to get the brave dog back on his feet. It only took three months for Sammi to recover fully, and Janie was glad that her dog was able to regain his mobility because he could barely move his legs during his initial evaluation.
He had to be assisted by multiple people so he could stand, and the intensive therapy helped him to strengthen his muscle. While he had slow progress, his will to recover became the reason he was able to walk again Even though he could not balance himself, his determination and patience motivated him to take his first steps.
Even Janie could not believe his improvement because she was the first to witness Sammi’s struggles. At the moment, Sammi is still undergoing rehabilitation, and Janie is confident that she would be able to walk again in no time.
