A family celebration became the final moments of a hero dog in a household in Houston, Texas.
The Martinez family was celebrating the 13th birthday of a son when suddenly a gunman, recognized as Javian Castaneda, arrived and began shooting the people in the party, according to the mother, Laura Martinez.
Castaneda wounded three people, before the family pet dog Zero, lunged at him and bit his arm. Zero, a Great Pyrenees dog breed, could not just witness what was happening to his own family, and he took action instinctively to protect them.
Unluckily, the gunman shot Zero as he was jumping towards him. Then he again got back at the family. Zero, already wounded, again lunged at Castaneda and forced him to the ground. The gunman again shot the dog for the second time which proved to be quite fatal.
Castaneda stole some things from the family house and went back again during the birthday celebration. He tried to make some trouble by yelling and punching two members of the family. Then he backed up and pulled a gun from his waist and started shooting people.
Laura Martinez was wounded in the leg, her son Taylor was shot in the foot and a visitor, Valerie Pace, got two bullets in her body. But it was their hero dog Zero who was fatally injured.
He never showed fear even if he was already in pain from the initial bullet that hit him. When the police arrived, the shooter has already left.
Castaneda is still on the loose and is considered “armed and dangerous.” The police are still looking for him whom they ‘believe is hiding in the Sagemont/South Houston/Hobby area’ according to Constable Christopher Diaz of the Harris County.
Zero, was rushed to the local vet, but he later succumbed to the injuries. The family is so thankful to Zero for saving their lives and said they would miss him a lot. The three people who suffered gunshot wounds were taken to the hospital and are now in stable condition.
Great Pyrenees dogs have again proven to be great guard animals and are willing to give up their own lives to protect their owners. Zero will forever live in the hearts of the Martinez family as a hero.
